With the massive cliffhanger leftover from Dragon Age: Inquisition and the fact that all games in the series tie-in with one another, most fans all have the same question in their hearts: Which characters are coming back this time? Here are ten that we hope to see make a return to the franchise.

✽✽✽ Warning! This article contains spoilers for the Dragon Age series up to Dragon Age 4. Read at your own discretion. ✽✽✽

10. Dagna and Lace Harding.

These two were the same type of characters. Neither was particularly big on the character spectrum, but each performed important roles for the Inquisition.

Dagna made her first appearance in Origins, where she was a dwarf living in Orzammar, but she wanted to join the Circle of Magi. Being a dwarf, Dagna is immune to lyrium and can never practice magic. She isn’t deterred by these facts because she only wants to study magic.

The Warden helps her get into the Circle, an event that helps the Inquisitor later in their adventure.

Dagna, now a master arcanist, shows up in Skyhold and offers her services.

Lace Harding is the Inquisition’s official scout and always has a witty comment or retort for the Inquisitor. She helps with strategic planning and even participates in some missions.

She becomes a protege of Leliana’s and may even be a romance option for a single Inquisitor.

There is always a need for a good scout, so Harding could easily pop in and make herself useful.

9. Cullen Rutherford.

Cullen is everyone’s favorite Templar-turned-military-adviser and has been an important figure in every major Dragon Age game to date.

Not bringing him back feels like being disloyal to the story. It isn’t immediately apparent in what capacity the former Knight Commander would return, but there is always room for a character that has appeared in every other game to date.

If the developers go the route of Fenris, Cullen likely ended up with the female inquisitor, meaning that if he resurfaces for another round, she could too.

8. Flemeth.

Flemeth is another character that has made an appearance in every main game. She has been a central character that plays from the sidelines, always important, but never taking center stage.

Every new installation of the series gives players a bit more background on this deeply intriguing character, yet there is always something that remains hidden.

It would be a shame for her story to end so abruptly, considering there is still so much to learn about her. It’s also difficult to believe that she is dead after the events of Inquisition. After all, there is always ‘just a piece’ of her out there somewhere.

7. Leliana.

Leliana has been an integral character from the beginning when she made her debut in Origins. While she wasn’t technically in Dragon Age 2, she did make an appearance, and her role was one of great importance. She was already working alongside Cassandra Pentaghast to find the Champion of Kirkwall.

Their only lead was Varric Tethras.

Depending on which way the player went with Leliana in Inquisition, it is almost a given that she will make a return in the newest installment. It will be interesting to see what her role is now and whether she will again be an ally.

~BONUS~

The Mabari War Hound.

The Mabari are incredibly intelligent magically-created dogs. They are loyal for life and are fierce fighters. Though they only show up as enemies in the second and third games, in Origins, if you are a noble human, they are a companion. It would be nice if they were to come back in that same capacity for the fourth game, or at least not always be an enemy, but players will have to wait and see on this one.

~BONUS~

6. Zevran Arainai.

Zevran is a skilled elven Crow assassin from Antiva that the Warden from Origins meets along their journey. Zevran is originally sent to kill the player, but after being bested in his attempt, he chooses to follow the player and becomes a trusted and faithful companion.

Like all the other characters that choose to follow the warden, Zevran is willing to fight and die at the player’s side. He is a romance option for both male and female wardens.

He made a small cameo in the second game with a quest that let the player see a bit of what had happened to him after the events of Origins. He hasn’t been seen since, however.

He could certainly make a comeback in Dragon Age 4 as a companion, helper, or even, less-appealingly, an enemy.

5. Fenris.

Fenris is everyone’s favorite mage-hating, broody elf. He was enslaved at a young age by a magister from the Tevinter Imperium, who infused his skin with lyrium. These circumstances have made him very distrustful of all mages, making him a wary ally to start with, especially if you’re a mage.

However, as time goes by, and Fenris sees mages in action, not always turning evil, he begins to soften, if only a little.

It’s hard to say how he could make a return, perhaps we could once again ally with Hawke, and Fenris will come along with them. If he does bring Hawke, that’s a two-for-one special for fans!

4. Alistair Theirin.

Alistair wasn’t always the king of Ferelden. He was once a companion of the Hero of Ferelden, choosing to follow rather than lead when the player became a Grey Warden.

It wasn’t until the very end that he fully realized the burden he carried and the duty left to him. Alistair is still a Grey Warden, as that never goes away, so that could come into play at some point.

It could be one reason he enters the player’s life in the upcoming game. He could make an appearance solely as the king.

3. Morrigan.

Morrigan is an iconic Dragon Age character that accompanied the Warden in Origins. She was an uncertain ally, to begin with, but later proved to be loyal.

She offers to conceive a child before the fight at Denerim in order to take the soul of the old God and save the wardens from having to sacrifice one of themselves to defeat him.

She offers her services once more in Inquisition and follows the Inquisitor, once again taking up her role of companion.

Morrigan is a powerful mage that has never had her magic restricted by the circle. She can be consumed by her own path, but never to the point of turning her back on an ally in need.

She could easily make a return in Dragon Age 4, as she is always useful in some way. Her immense knowledge alone entitles her to a position on any team.

2. Varric Tethras.

Varric is a laid-back surface dwarf that spends his days creating fantastic tales. Not only is he an accomplished author, but he is also a skilled rogue and a magnificent companion to have along the journey.

Before leaving Kirkwall, Varric and his brother Bartrand organized an expedition to the Deep Roads. Hawke, hoping to make their family wealthy, so they no longer had to work under someone else, lands a spot in the group.

Unfortunately, though the expedition yields untold wealth, Varric loses his brother. Bartrand, completely enamored with an idol made of red lyrium, locks Varric and Hawke together inside a Thaig and leaves them, presumably, to die.

They make their way out, and Varric begins the hunt for revenge. Eventually discovering that Bartrand has been driven completely mad by the idol, Varric has to make a terrible decision.

Varric always carries a custom-made crossbow he has affectionately named Bianca, though he refuses to reveal why. Some light is shed on this mystery when an old friend of Varric’s, Bianca, comes calling for help from Varric and the Inquisition.

A bit of the story is revealed through conversations with the Inquisitor and interactions with Bianca. It seems not only has Varric lost his brother, his parents were disgraced from Orzammar, and his best friend, Hawke, has gone into hiding, but Varric also apparently lost the love of his life once.

It is mentioned that Bianca had the choice between two weddings, one with Varric and one with a wealthy dwarf her parents chose for her. Varric was left standing at the altar.

No wonder he writes fantasy.

1. Dorian Pavus.

Dorian is a powerful mage hailing from the Tevinter Imperium.

As the game progresses and Dorian and the Inquisitor become closer, he reveals some of his sad past. He eventually explains why he has run so far from home and joined the Inquisition.

Dorian was always meant to be the best, the brightest, the top, and the pressures of not being able to be himself sent him tumbling over the edge. He ran away and was found by a high-ranking Magister, Gereon Alexius, who saw potential in him and took him under his wing.

After setting himself back on the path chosen for him, Dorian excelled until Alexius’ wife was killed by Darkspawn, and his son, Felix, was tainted by them.

Dorian and Alexius worked tirelessly for over two years to clear the taint and cure Felix. However, in a moment of frustration, a terrible argument between the two sent Dorian fleeing back into despair.

He spent his time drinking away his troubles and indulging in the company of other young men. His family, appalled by what they saw as debauchery and disgrace upon their prestigious name, kidnapped Dorian. They held him prisoner until he escaped and once again ran for his life, vowing to never return to Tevinter or his family.

He becomes a close confidant and can be a romance option for a male Inquisitor. He takes the role of best friend and near soul-mate to a female Inquisitor.

Dorian is the perfect ally. He is strong, intelligent, and witty and would always be an interesting character to add to other storylines.

If our character in Dragon Age 4 is going to Tevinter, Dorian might be the most useful companion to have. He said he would never return, but he has a serious soft spot for friends in need. One only needs to befriend him.
